As news comes in with various takes on the legitimacy of the presidential vote in Iran, not much is cleaer except one thing: the hypocrisy of western news media and government offcials who downplay, ignore or criminalize dissent in their own, supposedly democratic country but are its most vociferous defenders when the perpertrators are the so-called “rogue states”.
Here are some articles that provide food for thought. Note that they are not always in agreement, which is fine because we are not quite sure what to believe at this point. Note that as usual, they reflect the opinions of the writers, not necessarily TP. And also please note that accusations of CIA involvement in the protests is not the same as denying the actual aspirations for democracy by people in Iran or to suport state violence against protestors. Just as the US used feminist rhetoric to attack the Taliban and gain support for the equally Neanderthal Northern Alliance and other of its proxies in the war on terror, so the hypocrites in Washington and in the press rooms have something other than democracy on their minds when they attack the regime in Iran. Ditto when the issue is Tibet, Burma, etc. And lest anyone forget, the US helped to overthrow elected regimes in Iran nearly 50 years ago, on September 11, 1973 in Chile and tried to do the same in Venezuela just a few years ago.
