Doug Rawlings has lived in Maine since the mid-70’s, teaching high school English and teaching composition and Peace Studies at the University of Maine. He has two children and three grandchildren.
In 1985, he joined with four other veterans to form Veterans For Peace (VFP), an organization that now boasts chapters in every state of the union, as well as international chapters. In 1992, VFP was granted NGO status at the United Nations. Its mission is to abolish war, with members taking a pledge of nonviolence.
In 2014, Doug published his collection of poetry, ORION RISING, a series of poems that explores his life as a Vietnam War veteran, as a family man in Central Maine, and as a whimsical father of two children fascinated by the poetry of A.A. Milne. He continues to write poems that touch on political issues and rural life. His collection can be purchased here.
